News - Net Neutrality Takes Center Stage at Today’s MySpace/MTV Q&A with Senator Barack Obama
According to c|net, one of the questions asked of Senator Obama in today’s MySpace/MTV “dialogue” is MoveOn.org’s, “Would you make it a priority in your first year of office to reinstate Net Neutrality as the law of the land? And would you pledge to only appoint FCC commissioners that support open Internet principles like Net Neutrality?” I will post a link to the response when it’s available but you can also watch it on MTV tonight at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
One of the quotes from the c|net article stuck out for me:
“In 2008, voters are looking for real leadership,” said Adam Green, who leads MoveOn’s Internet freedom campaign. “Any presidential candidate who boldly promises to reinstate Net Neutrality during his or her first year in office, and to only appoint pro-neutrality FCC commissioners, will get tons of positive buzz online.”
As I mentioned last week, I think the economics of net neutrality will decide its ultimate fate, but Adam is probably right and as we all know, online buzz is a Siren song to politicians these days. So I believe we will continue to see politicians pandering to the net neutrality proponents during the campaign but yielding to its economics once in office.
UPDATE: here’s the video of the question and Senator Obama’s response:
