Let a Hundred Applications Bloom

VeriPhone?Verizon Wireless has set March 19 as the date it will release the first version of its open network service specs.  As c|net’s Marguerite Reardon points out, the pricing of the “Any Device, Any App” service is still up in the air (no pun intended):

“But even though Verizon appears to be embracing the network openness, the proof will be in how it actually implements the service. If it prices the service much higher than its traditional cell phone services, it could discourage consumers from even trying it.”

Given that Verizon Wireless probably has only a vague idea of the network impact of the new applications, it could be thinking about pricing as a means to manage bandwidth demands.
