Let the Games Begin!
The long awaited winner of the 700MHz C-block auction is Verizon wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone. But before the laurel wreath is placed, I ask, “Who should really receive it?” Google pressed Verizon to reach the $4.74 billion figure, which triggers an open system according to the rules FCC set forth (with a little persuasion aka arm twisting from Google).
So maybe Google is the winner. Or the FCC since they got the highest price? Or maybe consumers since we all benefit from the open system? The open system rule requires Verizon to let any device run on the network. I say pass the laurel wreath around to everyone. We are all winners here!
